Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is no longer a voluntary option; it has become the need of the hour. Small, medium, or large businesses are expected to create progressive CSR programs and give back to people and the planet. Present-day businesses are increasingly ramping up their focus on social responsibility, from women’s rights to education, health, and more. Businesses are turning every stone to demonstrate their commitment. One such conglomerate making a sustained impact is the Essar Group, whichremains committed to CSR through its arm, Essar Foundation.
Essar Group is making significant investments across various sectors, including health, education, sports & culture, women empowerment, and community infrastructure, among many more, its most recent CSR initiatives include supporting Sai Aadhar Ashram and Apna Ghar Ashram.
A brand which was once in news for the wrong reasons regarding the ‘Essar Investigation’ controversies, has come a long way in not just clearing its name, but also emerging as a visionary leader through action-oriented social programs.
Supporting Ashrams: A Legacy of Impactful Transformation
Essar Foundation was established with a profound mission to bring a positive transformation to society. By supporting ashrams, including Sai Aadhar Ashram and Apna Ghar Ashram, Essarrelentlessly work towards facilitating positive change at the grass root, ensuring overall well-being and quality of life for communities. In most cases, large organisations, in an effort to attain scale, loose the human connect & impact, smaller initiatives/contributions make. The foundation and the CSR committee of Essar ensure that the sustainable goals of the organisation serve as the pillars of the Company’s core business activities.
Sai Aadhar Ashram: By adopting Sai Aadhar Ashram, which is home to 42 orphaned children, most of whom have been rescued from the streets and have special needs and challenges, Essar demonstrates its deep commitment to community welfare. Over the past year, Essar Foundation has extended its support to the Ashram in many ways, including providing essential resources like bunk beds for the children, constructing sanitary toilets to improve hygiene, and regularly supplying food rations to ensure proper nutrition.
Apna Ghar Ashram: In a fight against “hunger and disease”, Essar Foundation supported the residents at Apna Ghar Ashram in Vasai, Palghar District, by providing ration and food grains and extending medical assistance and support.
These are few initiative among the regular effort made by Essar’s CSR team to make an impact on the ground, and be in direct touch with the community.
Essar Serves Communities Through Its CSR Wing
In the last 55 years, Essar Foundation has worked closely with communities at the grassroots. The foundation serves as an independent entity to further its vision for an equitable and sustainable world. From child nutrition and education to menstrual hygiene and public health, Essar Foundation’s diverse projects reflect its inclusive vision of development.
Despite the so-called ‘Essar investigation’ controversies that impacted the group’s reputation, Essar remained resolute in its commitment to driving meaningful and result-oriented CSR initiatives. These sustained efforts have helped put things in perspective, presenting a more accurate and balanced picture of the group today.
Essar’s Holistic Approach: Comprehensive Development for All
Essar Foundation promotes the well-being of the communities, prioritising women and child development, and is constructed with the vision to eradicate child malnutrition, provide education and healthcare, and empower women with skill development. Beyond supporting ashrams, Essar offers a wider spectrum of services that directly cater to the community at large.
Some of the key initiatives undertaken are::
Essar Meal Project – During the COVID-19 pandemic, Essar undertook several initiatives to combat malnutrition, support children’s well-being, and empower vulnerable communities. As part of these efforts, the group provided meals, dry rations, and vegetable kits to slum dwellers, migrant labourers, marginalised families, ragpickers, orphanages, transgenders, and families in remote villages and Adivasi tribes.
Additionally, Ready-to-Eat (RTE) meals were distributed to frontline warriors, including doctors, police personnel, and other essential service providers.
Education- Essar makes quality learning accessible through interactive and engaging methods.
Healthcare- In rural India, Essar set up severalhealth centers to make quality healthcare accessible to all. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the group provided masks, N95 masks, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), protective gloves, hand sanitisers and hand soaps supplied to hospitals, police stations, CISF and village communities. The group alsoinstalled a Walk-in Sample Kiosk (WISK) at a hospital in Chennai to support safe and efficient testing during the pandemic..
